skilbaseThe Skill Base project is a consortium with Community Council of Staffordshire, Chase CVS and managed by Stafford District Voluntary Services, offering training opportunities at a subsidisied rate ( Band 1 or 2) for employees, trustees and volunteers working in a voluntary and community organisation in the locality of Stafford Borough and Cannock Chase District. In addition statutory, private and voluntary and community organisations outside the locality can access the training on a band 3 basis.

We aim to help.
If the workshop fees and travel arrangements are barrier to learning for your organisation, please contact the Skill Base team and we can assess whether support can be provided through the Rural Access to Services Partnership or other means.

How to be kept informed?
We distribute a Skill Base Training Brochure 3 to 4 times a year using the database of our consortium members Community Council of Staffordshire, Chase CVS and Stafford District Voluntary Services. To view the latest courses click here.

If you are not on those mailing lists and presently receiving a copy, please let the Skill Base team know. In addition to the Skill Base brochure we update local voluntary and community organisations of discounts, workshop availability, additional workshops, advice and information on why workshops are appropriate to an organisation via the free weekly SDVS Headlines email and regular Skill Base e bulletins. To be kept informed contact the Skill Base team to be added to the email distribution list.

The Skill Base Project Aims and Outcomes

  • A stronger and more confident local voluntary and community sector that will be able to deliver better and more efficient services to its users.
  • An increase in the number of organisations that will have developed their employees and volunteers, improving their skills and knowledge.
  • More voluntary and community groups will be able to self assess their own training needs.
  • Voluntary Sector learning needs will have been addressed in a highly accessible and affordable way

In House Training
If you require specific training for your own organisation, Skill Base can offer an in house training service to meet your needs. Examples in the past have included evening and weekend in house training for trustees on their finanical responsibilities and charity law. Contact the Skill Base Team for more info.

Skill Base Group Review Service
The Skill Base Group Review Service is provided free of charge to voluntary and community organisations in Stafford Borough that are members of Stafford District Voluntary Services Staffordshire. Also the service is offered free to voluntary and community groups in Stafford Borough and Cannock Chase District that are members of Community Council of Staffordshire and the Playaway project. The existing health check service at Chase CVS will continue to be provided by the Chase CVS Development Team.

What is a group review?
Using the model developed by Islington Voluntary Action Council, the group review service is carried out by the Skill Base Training Coordinator and involves meetings with senior management, chairperson or another trustee that has responsibility for training and development of the organisation. It involves 3 to 4 meetings of approximately 1 – 1.5 hours duration, or two half day sessions. From this a report is drawn up by the training coordinator that priorities the training and development needs of the voluntary and community organisation, looking at the needs of employees, management, volunteers and trustees. The training coordinator will then source training workshops to meet the priorities of the report and attendance on these workshops will most likely have a cost element. It is a very informal, friendly process that will help to provide developmental support to the organisation and a third party report that can be used as evidence for funding bids.

What areas does the group review cover ?
The group review covers the areas of governance, leadership, management of people, staffing/personnel, personnel policies, volunteers, morale, strategy, publicity and promotion, planning, business plan, monitoring and evaluation, budgeting, fundraising ( self fund raising and Grants/procurement) finance and insurance.

Pqasso Quality Award
It is hoped that the Skill Base Group Review Service will develop to providing an organisation with development support in an organisation taking forward the pqasso quality assurance award. If you are interested in receiving pqasso mentor support, please let the Skill Base team know.

What is a quality award?
A quality assurance system is a system that allows you to find out and respond to
the needs of your users, so that you can provide an appropriate service consistently
and to agree standards. You should be able to provide evidence that you are doing so.

Accessing the Skill Base Group Review Service
